In 1990, Manchester United were the third most successful club in England (trophy wise), miles behind Liverpool and even Arsenal. Over the decade that followed, United's overwhelming financial superiority became firmly established, and the club had a period of unprecedented success, overtaking Arsenal's haul of league titles and approaching Liverpool's record. United fans like to claim that the success preceded the money, but I would argue that the opposite is true.
In 1991, Manchester United became the first English club to be floated on the London Stock Exchange, raising £6.7m immediately. I believe it is this event that lead to Manchester United's unparalleled financial strength. Being a Publicly Limited Company, Manchester United were able to take money from shares sold and invest this into the team, allowing them to spend more on transfer fees, offer higher wages and (arguably most importantly) invest in the expansion of their stadium. Of course, it seems like any club could have done the exact same thing, which is mostly true - other football clubs would have been legally permitted to become PLCs as well. But there is one (literally) huge difference that set Manchester United apart from its rivals: Old Trafford.
Old Trafford was built in 1909, with an original capacity of over 80,000 seats. (By the way, according to wikipedia and the book it cites, even back then the club was referred to as "Moneybags United" - which further supports my argument.) Over time, the capacity and architecture of the ground changed, but never did Manchester United ever have to consider moving grounds, even after the Taylor Report in 1990 when they had a capacity of 44,000. Rather than needing to build a new ground, Manchester United were able to redevelop Old Trafford.
This is why Manchester United PLC was an insanely attractive investment, and why the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal were not: all those other clubs would need to build new stadiums rather than expanding their existing one, which would mean a far lesser return-on-investment than United enjoyed. These other clubs were not able to expand their grounds because they were built in areas that do not account for the necessary transportation and safety requirements of modern-day football - considerations that did not exist when these grounds were purchased in the 1900s and 1910s.
In other words, it is a fortunate coincidence that Old Trafford was so ripe for expansion, thus a fortunate coincidence that Manchester United PLC was such an attractive investment, thus a fortunate coincidence that Manchester United became so lucrative and a financial behemoth. Please note that this is not to disparage United, as they took the fantastic hand they were dealt and played it to its full efficacy. This is only to dispel the false notion that success preceded wealth. It didn't.

- The Brief History of Old Trafford:
The above words were written on Old Trafford’s opening day in 1910. Manchester United had just moved from their old stadium of Bank Street, Clayton, to a new stadium in the Old Trafford area of west Manchester. Built in 1909, for the then huge sum of GBP60,000 it was terraced on three sides with a seated main stand undercover. The stadium was designed by famous Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, who also designed stands at Hampden Park, Ibrox Stadium and White Hart Lane. In 1911 and 1915 it held the FA Cup final and in 1920 it had its largest ever attendance of 70,504 for a league game against Aston Villa. The FA Cup Semi-Finals of 1939 of Portsmouth vs Grimsby would top that with 76,962. The stadium was heavily damaged in World War 2 and for a while United played at local rivals, Man City’s Maine Road stadium from 1946-1949. Old Trafford was a venue for the 1966 World Cup and also held the 1970 FA Cup Final replay between Chelsea and Leeds. Old Trafford became the first stadium to erect perimeter fencing in the 1970′s to combat crowd disturbances. Roofed cover was later added to the other three sides of the stadium, however all these stands suffered from obstructed views because of old fashioned roof-post design. In the mid 1960s development of modern cantilever stands began on the north and east of the ground. The new design had terracing at the front and a large seated section behind. Gradually the entire ground was redeveloped in the 70s and 80s, culminating with the Stretford End in 1994. In the 1960s, 70s and 80s, over 58,000 could pack into Old Trafford. However in the early 1990s after the Hillsbrough disaster, the Taylor Report required England’s top teams to become all-seater stadiums. The Old Trafford design master plan of the 1960′s was now complete and the stadium was a perfect bowl, but With United more popular than ever the reduced 44,000 capacity was just too small. This led to further expansion in 1995-6 with the construction of the giant three-tiered North Stand, holding 26,000 and bringing capacity to nearly 56,000. The North Stand, reaching around 200 feet in height has four lift towers and the largest cantilever roof in Europe. This massive, brooding structure towers over the pitch, intimidating opposing teams. Costing GBP19 million to build it also houses the excellent United Museum (open on non-match days) and glittering trophy room (hopefully always full) as well as the Red Cafe restaurant and two layers of executive “Sky” boxes. The South stand is the main stand at Old Trafford, containing the managers bench area, the directors/ television/ police control boxes and luxury restaurants and executive suites. Here, the seating slopes at a different angle to the rest of the stadium, making it slightly lower than the other stands. Interestingly, the first 20 or so rows of seats around all four sides of the ground are below street level. The South stand is rarely seen on television as it contains the TV gantry, which looks North. The players tunnel used to be at the centre of this stand but in 1993 it was moved to the South-west corner. The old tunnel still remains and is opened for special occasions and stadium tours. The East Stand is home to the diehard K-Stand United fans as well as the away fans enclosure in the South-East corner and disabled section. It was formerly known as the Scoreboard End, so called because of the large scoreboard that resided until the late 60s, when an electronic one was installed. This scoreboard was recently replaced by two modern electronic scoreboards in each corner of the North Stand. Further building redevelopment added a second tier at the east end in January 2000, making a 61,000 capacity. On the outside is a large tinted glass front, similar to a modern office block. Here stands the Sir Matt Busby Statue, Munich memorial plaque and the famous clock commemorating the Munich air crash on 6th February 1958. Its also the location of the huge Manchester United Megastore where every type of club merchandise is available. The west side of the ground for many, will always be known as the legendary Stretford End. In the days before all-seater stadia the Stretford End was a heaving mass of almost 20,000 standing United fans who were amongst the loudest in Britain. It was once measured that the roar from the crowd was louder than a Jumbo Jet taking off. The old terrace was replaced in 1993 and in August 2000 a second tier of seating was added here, bringing a total capacity of 67,750. The West Stand holds the Family seating area and beneath the corner is the players dressing rooms/tunnel and lounge. It also has a statue of 60′s striker Denis Law in the upper concourse – Law was known as “The King of The Stretford End”. Old Trafford was a Euro 96 venue and is now an annual host for the FA Cup Semi-final. Many claim the atmosphere at Old Trafford is not as good as it once was, ironically it is the legend of the Old Trafford atmosphere that has brought the tourists yet they are partly responsible for its decline. Sir Alex Ferguson has often complained about the lack of singing and low noise levels, therefore the new upper West Stand tier has designated singing areas to try and recreate the days of old. The long-term plan for the stadium is to rebuild the South stand in a similar style to the North and fill in the corners to make a whopping 90,000. Possible hindrances to further enlargement are the nearby Bridgewater Canal and railway track which restrict space around the stadium. There are currently no plans for any more expansion work in the immediate future. Old Trafford is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most famous sporting arena’s in the world. In an era where many clubs are moving from their traditional homes and although down the years it has changed beyond all recognition, the magic of Old Trafford will always remain. On a big match day or European night the atmosphere is as good as any venue in world football. The Theatre of Dreams (as Bobby Charlton named it) is the biggest club ground in Britain and a fitting home for the world’s most famous football club.

- Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson backs overhaul of academy system in bid to close gap with Barça
Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United’s prospects of competing with Barcelona rely on the Premier League pushing through its planned overhaul of the structure for coaching young players after claiming that the Spanish side hold a huge advantage over English clubs.
By Mark Ogden 11:59PM BST 30 May 2011
Barcelona claimed their second Champions League title in three years – both at the expense of United – by inflicting a humbling 3-1 defeat on the Premier League champions at Wembley on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola’s team were inspired by seven home-grown players, including Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi.
Premier League-driven plans are in place to radically restructure youth coaching in this country, which could result in those aged 10-18 getting three times as long on the training pitch.
But Ferguson, a long-time critic of the academy system, insists that the changes cannot come quickly enough for English teams.
“We are only allowed to coach [schoolboys] for an hour and a half [each week]. Barcelona can coach every hour of the day if they want and that’s the great advantage they have got. You can see their philosophy through that,” Ferguson said.
“It’s a fantastic philosophy and we hope that, in years to come, we have more time with young players, to teach them the basics, the technical ability and to have the confidence to take the ball all the time. We’re good at that, but we’re not as good as Barcelona at this moment in time. It’s a wonderful challenge and we can always accept a challenge.”
Academy regulations state that young players can receive no more than 3,760 ‘contact time’ hours on the training pitch up to the age of 21.
But under the leadership of Ged Roddy, who spent 17 years as director of sport at the University of Bath, the Premier League’s Elite Player Performance Plan is moving towards a blueprint that will result in English youngsters narrowing the coaching gap.
Young players at the Ajax academy in Holland and Barcelona’s La Masia facility, which adopted the Ajax model under former Barcelona coach Johan Cruyff in the early-1990s, can expect to receive 7,000-8,000 hours of coaching between the ages of 10-18.
Leading Premier League clubs are supportive of the EPPP, with United’s academy director, Brian McClair, and Neil Bath, the Chelsea academy director, working with Roddy to help formulate what senior figures in the Premier League regard as the most radical revamp of youth development since Howard Wilkinson’s Charter for Quality, which was introduced in 1998.
The move to increase ‘deliberate practice time’, as called for by Ferguson, is viewed as a key aspect of the EPPP and one that will enable leading clubs to produce a new generation of leading players.
United’s academy is regarded as one of the most productive in the country and highly-rated prospects such as Ravel Morrison and Ryan Tunnicliffe, both Manchester-born, inspired Paul McGuinness’s youth team to the club’s 10th FA Youth Cup this month.
United and their Premier League rivals, plus those Football League clubs with academy licences, can only source players aged between 14-16 from within a 90-minute radius of their home ground, however. That is reduced to 60 minutes for those under 14. In contrast, Spanish clubs can recruit from the whole country.
The 90-minute ring-fence is expected to be reviewed at the Premier League’s annual meeting next week. It is unlikely that the Spanish system will be adopted, with a more realistic outcome being a relaxation of some of the restrictions.
Academy-licensed clubs are free, under the current regulations, to open developmental centres in which they can coach local children in areas without Premier League representations, such as the South West.
Meanwhile, Michael Owen will discuss his Manchester United future with Sir Alex Ferguson this week admitting his determination to extend his stay at Old Trafford to a third season.
Owen, who is out of contract at United next month, started just one Premier League game last season.
Ferguson is also set to meet Paul Scholes this week in an attempt to talk the 36-year-old midfielder out of retirement.
Gimana mo jago kalo nyentuh bola aja dibatasin jamnya ? |

Red Devils' Financial Situation Continues To Improve
Off the field, Manchester United remain the largest money-making machine in sport, with hugely positive results announced for the first quarter of the club's financial year. The Red Devils posted a turnover in the period of £73.8 Million, a healthy 16.6% increase compared to the previous three months ending September. The world's biggest club reported growth in commercial, media and matchday income, with DHL providing the main commercial money...
Despite the income increasing, there has been widespread criticism of the depletion of the club's cash reserves. Before the summer spending spree of £50 Million plus and millions more in debt repayments, the holdings stood at £152.7 Million, but The Glazer Family have reduced the stash by a whopping £86.7 Million to £65 Million. These reserves are added to on occasion, and may be again soon following the reaction from supporters.
But, income keeps Manchester United at the top of the financial game, with revenue up 16.6% (from £63.3 Million to £73.8 Million) compared to the same period last year. DHL agreed a 4-year, £40 Million sponsorship with The Reds for their training kits, providing a large rise in commercial turnover. These sector saw an increased of 22.3%, from £24.2 Million to £29.6 Million, with the help of some 660 Million United fans as well !
'The Premier League Champions' status did it's part, seeing a 16.5% rise in media proceeds, from £19.4 Million to £22.6 Million. Matchday income also increased, by 9.6% from £19.7 Million to £21.6 Million, thanks to hospitality packages being sold-out for the first time since before the economic recession. Profit after operating costs (£54.4 Million) stood at £19.3 Million, a 29.5% rise from £14.9 Million. A pre-tax loss of £6.9 Million was noted.
Debt has been reduced significantly, now standing at £433.2 Million. |

Mungkin dia lelah," ucapnya. === manteb ni pemain skillnya mudah2an MU bs dapet |
